While many boaters focus solely on gallons per hour GPHthis is a meaningless number on its own. Without calculating miles per gallon MPG it is impossible to say. Gallons per hour can be helpful when calculating range and determining whether you have enough fuel to get to your destination.
If you are consuming 20 GPH and you will be running for five more hours, then you know you will burn gallons of fuel before arriving.
But that does not speak to fuel economy. When we compare cars, we all agree that MPG is our standard. So we will adopt the same standard for this article. In this particular example, we see that although the difference is minor, the boat burning more gallons per hour achieves better mileage.
For the purposes of this discussion, we will concentrate on nautical miles per gallon, which we will abbreviate to nMPG. A given hull will require a certain amount of energy to move it through the water.
The fuel contains the stored energy and we can describe that in terms of horsepower hpkilowatts kWor British thermal units BTU. One gallon of diesel fuel stores about 38 kilowatt hours of energy, orBTU.
The engine converts that energy into the power needed to overcome resistance and move the boat through the water. As for the boat, the more easily it moves through the water, the less energy is required. The primary factors that influence how easily the hull can be moved include hull shape, length, total weight, and drag. Hull shapes can be sorted into three basic categories: full displacement, semi-displacement, and planing. Which offers the best fuel economy?

This does not represent a big difference in fuel consumption per power unit between most normal naturally aspirated diesel engines, while turbocharged engines are not significantly better. Fuel consumption for diesel engines is normally more difficult to express than for petrol engines because of the vast variability in possible applications.
Applications like stationary industrial, marine, automotive, and earthmoving are examples of this variability. So it is normal to express this fuel consumption as a rate in terms of the weight of fuel consumed per unit of power produced. A real headache for plant managers! Now even if an engine operates for long periods at a constant speed it seldom operates at its full rated power.
The aim of turbochargers and aftercoolers are to increase engine efficiency and they do just that. Some of the new turbocharger technologies have resulted in almost unbelievable increases in power output per cylinder of the engine, but this alas, is not a saving in fuel consumption per unit of power produced.
Even so, after some study we have decided to compile two fuel consumption charts, the first one we'll say is for naturally aspirated engines and the second we'll say is for turbocharged engines.
However this is an arbitrary classification, and so it's best to get the actual fuel consumption rate for your engine from the manufacturer's spec sheet and then to decide which fuel consumption table should apply to your engine. We'll provide more information on this later, with some example spec sheets to show their theoretical consumption. You will find some turbocharged engines need to use the table labeled "For naturally aspirated engines" because that's exactly where their fuel consumption falls.

Sure, electronic engine management reduces exhaust emissions and allows for real-time fuel flow and range-to-empty meters but in remote areas a mechanical engine is easier to repair than an electronic unit.
This is why mechanically injected engines from John Deere are popular in long-range trawler yachts. But these are heavy, achieve maximum output at much lower revs and are intended for full displacement hulls, not semi-displacement cruisers.
Way simpler when it comes to checking valve clearances. For its output the STP is a fairly high-revving engine, though not as high as the six. And Yanmar has kept a reliable OHV design with gear-driven pushrods plus a cast-iron cylinder block and head, even though freshwater heat exchanger cooling is standard.

Mechanically injected diesels must be worked to maintain a long service life. As the maximum torque band is from rpm the STP should not be run continuously below rpm. Power Equipment, the national Yanmar distributor, provides examples of the STP fitted to actual boats. A Fairway 36 cruises at 12kt and rpm and runs out to 18kt at wide-open throttle, whereas twin STP engines cruise a metre Millcraft cat at 16kt, with WOT achieving 22kt.
